GENEVA: National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Chairman Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, recently apprised the international community on grave violations of human rights in the disputed state of Jammu Kashmir.
During his current visit to Switzerland as the special envoy of the Prime Minister, Leghari, called on the presidents of the Human Rights Council and ICRC as well as other ambassadors to brief them about the atrocities being committed in the valley at the hands of the Indian armed forces. The Indian forces were unleashing violence on the defenseless people of Jammu Kashmir, he added.
Leghari also highlighted the alarming impact of pellet gun injuries to the peaceful protestors that had largely resulted in blindness. He emphasized the importance of the implementation of UN Security Council’s resolutions that had previously recognized Jammu Kashmir as a disputed territory and called for a free and fair plebiscite to actualize the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.
The envoy also referred to the Prime Minister’s letters addressed to the UN Secretary-General and the High Commissioner for Human Rights to put an end to the grievous brutalities of Indian forces and investigate the atrocities committed against Kashmiris. He is expected to meet important dignitaries in Geneva in order to apprise them of the plight of the helpless Kashmiris, who continue to demand the international community to end this terror and violence being unleashed on them.
