Freedom Network (FN), an award-winning Pakistan-based media watchdog has recorded over 150 cases of attacks against media and journalists in Pakistan over the past one year.
This situation is negatively impacting freedom of expression and access to information in this country.
According to the FN Press Freedom Barometer 2018 over the course of May 1, 2017 to April 1, 2018, at least 157 cases were recorded in provinces, Islamabad and the tribal areas.
The report read, “An average of about 15 cases a month, one every second day have been recorded. The violations included killing and kidnappings of journalists, physical attacks and injuries, arrests, threats and specific cases of harassment.”
Five working journalists were killed for their work this year, the report said.
According to the report, media houses were attacked 20 times in the previous year and Islamabad is one of the most dangerous cities for journalists in Pakistan with 35 per cent of the violations taking place there.
Surprisingly, the report claimed that the state posed a greater threat to media workers than did militant, religious and criminal groups.
